Carbonation is a chemical process where carbon dioxide from the air reacts with calcium hydroxide in concrete to form calcium carbonate, reducing the pH. This allows corrosion of steel reinforcement by breaking the protective oxide layer. It can be detected using phenolphthalein indicator spray. To prevent corrosion, use good quality low w/c ratio concrete with sufficient cover depth. Chlorides from various sources can also break the protective layer and cause corrosion once the threshold level is reached.
