André-Marie Ampère was a French mathematician and physicist born in 1775. He showed early interest in mathematics but his studies were interrupted by the French Revolution when his father was beheaded. Ampère later married but his wife fell ill and died, leaving him to care for their child alone. He accepted positions teaching mathematics in Lyon and Paris.
