What is Model of the Temperature Dependence of the Hysteresis Losses in a High-temperature Superconductor about?

The on-going development of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) will probably lead to future power applications based on these conductors. To accomplish an optimal design of such applications, useable models of the power losses of the superconductor are needed. The temperature dependence of the power losses should be included in such a model, as the losses in a HTS strongly depend on this parameter. At power frequencies and moderate transport currents the hysteresis loss is the dominant part of the power loss. We have investigated the temperature dependence of the hysteresis losses by performing systematic measurements of these losses as a function of AC transport currents and AC external magnetic fields at different temperatures. The losses were measured at a fixed frequency on a multi-filamentary Bi-2223 tape, applying a calorimetric method. Models of the temperature dependence of the critical current and the penetration field have been developed, to describe the temperature dependence of the hysteresis losses. These parameters are included in expressions of the hysteresis losses, derived from the critical state theory.
