This study prospectively evaluated the characteristics, type, and severity of dysarthria in 151 patients with acute ischemic stroke. 44% of patients were diagnosed with dysarthria based on a speech assessment within 72 hours of admission. For those with dysarthria, the most common speech characteristics were imprecise consonants, harsh voice, and audible inspiration.
