What is Alonte about?

The Constitutional Law II case involved Mayor Bayani Alonte who was accused of rape. During the trial, the judge Maximo Savellano found Alonte guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court ruled that Savellano should recuse himself due to apparent bias against Alonte. The Court also found that Alonte did not waive his right to due process just by not cross-examining the witness, as waiver requires voluntary and knowing relinquishment of rights. The case was remanded for retrial.
