What is Numerical and Analytical Study to the Uniqueness Problem in Identification of Uniaxial Parameters Through Spherical Indentation about?

In the identification of uniaxial parameters using indentation techniques, it is usually difficult for numerical optimization methods to converge to the experiment result due to the uniqueness problem which manifests as hard-to-distinguish load-penetration (L-h) curves for notably different stress-strain curves. In this paper, an efficient and easy-to-use optimization scheme named local optimization-fitting (LOF) approach is established and applied to spherical indentation, which can not only give an accurate identification to the uniaxial parameters, but also provide the possible hard-to-distinguish materials of the tested material and their distribution on the parameter plane. Based on the distributions of hard-to-distinguish materials given by LOF, a plastic-strain-energy-density (PSED) assumption is proposed and verified analytically. By applying the PSED assumption, uniqueness problem is studied beyond the limitation of power law stress-plastic strain relation. Other influencing factors to uniqueness problems such as friction and strain gradient hardening are also discussed.
