The Michelson-Morley experiment aimed to detect the motion of Earth through the hypothesized luminiferous ether by measuring the speed of light in perpendicular directions. Using a sensitive interferometer, they found no significant difference between the speed of light in the direction of the presumed ether flow and perpendicular to it. This null result was unexpected and challenged the ether theory of light propagation, having profound implications for the development of special relativity.
