Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe tells the story of Okonkwo, a respected leader in the Igbo community of Umuofia in Nigeria. However, as British colonialism spreads, Okonkwo struggles to adapt to the changes it brings. Missionaries introduce Christianity, which many villagers convert to. When Okonkwo kills a messenger, he realizes the community will surrender to colonial rule. Overcome by these changes, Okonkwo commits suicide, demonstrating how colonialism disrupted traditional Igbo society.
