This study examined the temporal relationship between alcohol dependence and major depression using data from the Epidemiological Catchment Area survey. The study found that alcohol dependence was an independent risk factor for later depression in both men and women, but depression did not significantly increase risk of later alcohol dependence except for a correlation between depressive symptoms and alcoholism onset in women.
