What is Stoic Regret about?

Arius Didymus’ account of Stoic ethics includes the claim that the good (spoudaios) person will be free from regret while all others (the phauloi) will be subject to regret. The chapter offers an account of regret as a Stoic pathos and considers whether, as some critics such as Galen argued, the Stoic account of regret is incompatible with their Socratic, intellectualist picture of moral psychology. It concludes that there is no reason to think that the Stoics cannot give a satisfactory account of regret for voluntary actions without having to revise their general commitment to a Socratic and intellectualist psychology and that their account of regret helps to illustrate the rich resources available to their position.
