This study examines the use of metallothionein assays to bio-monitor trace metal stress in Nile cichlids thriving in fishponds fed with contaminated wastewater in the East Calcutta Wetlands Ramsar site. The wastewater received from over 6,000 industries contains elevated levels of heavy metals including zinc, iron, manganese, chromium, copper, and lead. Fish from wastewater-fed ponds were found to have higher concentrations of these metals in their organs compared to fish from freshwater-fed ponds. Metallot
