What is Pulmonary and Systemic Circulation Flowcharts about?

The pulmonary circulation functions to bring blood into close contact with the alveoli in the lungs so that gas exchange can occur. Oxygen-poor blood is pumped from the right ventricle into the pulmonary trunk and is distributed through several branching pulmonary arteries to the capillaries surrounding each air sac. In the capillaries, oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood and carbon dioxide moves out. The now oxygen-rich blood drains into pulmonary veins and returns to the left atrium of the heart.
