What is May, Rollo Reese about?

## Background Rollo Reece May, generally considered the father of existential psychotherapy, was born April 21, 1909, in Ada, Ohio, and grew up in Michigan in a difficult household (Bugental 1996a, b). He was the second oldest of six children and assumed much of the responsibility in the household while his father was gone on frequent YMCA trips. May's mother was not heavily involved with him or his siblings, often leaving them to themselves. May attended Michigan State College for some time and completed his bachelor's degree in 1930 at Oberlin College. In the early 1930s, May taught in Greece for several years, which was arguably one of his most influential experiences (Bugental 1996b;Schneider et al. 2009).
