Armenian Associations during the Mandate The appearance, besides Churches, political parties, and regional patriotic unions, of a number of Armenian associations, was an important component of the process of re-construction of the Armenian world in Lebanon and Syria. First of all, Armenian associations contributed remarkably to the material support of the refugees, providing food, clothing, medical care and other forms of relief in the camps. 81 But the associations also became new reference points for Armenian socialization, contributing to the preservation of cultural traditions and to the perception of the community as a self-contained group which could provide for its own needs.Many of the early Armenian associations in Lebanon and Syria were charities created in response to the demands of the refugees. A crucial role in establishing and running these charities was played by the Armenian Churches, renewing a tradition of self-aid structures usually co-ordinated at the level of individual congregations. In the case of the Apostolic Church this had become institutionalised in the form of Aghkadakhnam (care for the poor) associations: one of these had been operating at the church
