In his massive monograph "The Emperor in the Roman World", Fergus Millar wrote that "a history of the properties of the Roman emperor cannot be written". (London 1977, 175). The principal aim of M(aiuro)'s Res Caesaris is to prove this assessment false by collecting and analysing all the literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence for imperial estates in Italy during the Principate. Following Mommsen and Lo Cascio, M. interprets the emperor's power over the imperial patrimonium as a form of private ‚ownership' (dominium) while rightly calling attention to the fact that, unlike the properties of private individuals, those of the emperor were augmented not only by purchases, gifts and bequests but also by the absorption of formerly regal properties in newly conquered provinces and by the acquisition of properties belonging to citizens who had been condemned to death or exiled and deprived of the Roman citizenship.
