The Eprom is like a block of mailboxes, each containing an 8-bit message. The address of a mailbox is used as input to read its contents from the output. Messages are stored in binary code as 1s and 0s. Hexadecimal is used to represent binary addresses and contents more easily, using 16 unique characters (0-9, A-F) instead of decimal. A microprocessor can read information permanently stored in an Eprom but cannot change it, accessing data by setting the address pins to the appropriate binary code.
