SCANNED VERSION The Kitab al-Hikam or Book of Wisdoms of Ibn 'Ata'illah al-Iskandari al-Shadhili (d. 709/1309) is a foundational work of mysticism and ethics. In some 262 aphorisms in the form of elegant Arabic verse, followed by four short homilies and a section of 'intimate discourses', the entire basis of the Sufi path is laid out and summarized. Ibn 'Ata'illah was the third master of the Shadhili lineage (now spread across the world), and the first of them to write extensively: the founding Shaykh and his successor, Abu l-Hasan al-Shadhili (d. 656/1258) and Abu l-'Abbas al-Mursi (d. 686/1288), corresponded and created litanies and devotions, including the famous Hizb al-Bahr (Litany of the Sea), but no book-length exposition of the tariqa appeared until Ibn 'Ata'illah, who broke with the traditions of literary Sufism to create short, focused treatises like the Hikam rather than massive tomes.
