What is Systemic Pain Conditions and Dry Eye Disease about?

Dry eye disease has a very similar patient profile and shares many risk factors with chronic overlapping pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorders, low back pain, and chronic pelvic/bladder pain. There is evidence of shared genetic risk of dry eye with these systemic pain conditions, and similar peripheral neuropathy and central sensitization have been demonstrated. Dry eye symptoms and systemic pain may start with trauma and there may be evidence of inflammatory biomarkers, but in all these conditions there is a poor correlation between symptoms and signs, and symptoms are strongly influenced by mental health disorders. Management of dry eye patients with few signs may need to involve holistic multidisciplinary teams experienced in managing systemic pain syndromes.
