What is Moving Bed Biofilm Bioreactors for Wastewater Treatment about?

Biological wastewater treatment using the attached growth process has been widely popular in the form of trickling filters, rotating biological contactors, fixed and fluidized bed reactors, and so forth. However, these treatment systems have imperfections, such as (1) ineffective use of the working volume, (2) high head loss, (3) hydraulic instability in the form of short-circuiting, and (4) the need for backwashing and cleaning. As a solution to these limitations, moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) were developed, which effectively use the available effective volume of the reactor at a minimal head loss with no need for cleaning or backwashing (Ahmadi et al., 2011;Andreottola et al., 2003). MBBRs were developed in the late 1980s in Norway for small-scale community-based treatment plants. Since their successful application and reliable performance were demonstrated, MBBRs have been widely used for wastewater treatment at decentralized (Li et al., 2022) as well as centralized wastewater treatment plants (Phanwilai et al., 2020).
