What is Patriarchs, Romans and (Modern) Scholars: A Response to Seth Schwartz about?
I n a recent article in this journal Seth Schwartz bestows on me a dubious distinction. 1 He selects me as the best exemplification of a 'serious misunderstanding', common in historiography on the Palestinian patriarchs, about the character of Roman rule. Since this is not the type of superlative one seeks, I am grateful for the chance to respond. What follows is not a discussion of Schwartz's hypothesis about the role of the Diaspora in the evolution of the patriarchal office. Instead, I hope to advance the debate by clarifying the nature of our disagreements and the positions of each side. I shall limit my response to three points.
