Clifford Egan traces the uneasy course of diplomatic relations between the United States and Napoleonic France in the ten years following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Although it was Britain on which the United States declared war in the summer of 1812, many Americans were convinced that war should be declared on France as well. When the Napoleonic Wars broke out in Europe, the United States was determined to remain neutral. But as the struggle between Britain and France intensified, both sides began to see America's prosperous neutrality as an obstacle to its war effort. Britain was critical of what it saw as American subservience to France, and it responded by imposinging restrictions on American trade and taking every opportunity to inhibit its shipping. France, in turn, demanded that the United States forcefully protect its honor and independence in the face of British harassment, and showed its displeasure by imposing its own set of trade restrictions, capriciously detaining American ships in port, seizing American property, and blocking diplomatic overtures for obtaining West Florida from Spain.
