What is The Unique Character of Vatican II’s Teaching about?
## Abstract Since the end of Vatican II, there has been an ongoing battle on the normativity of this council, the interpretation of its texts, and its peculiar character. This chapter explores the qualitative uniqueness of the council reflected in the events and the documents it produced, from the papal invitation and throughout all the sessions. It argues that Immanuel Kant and his notions of transcendental logic and of the related transcendental form of reflection provide a way to understand the council’s peculiar character and uniqueness and to demonstrate how the epistemological presuppositions of Vatican II are not to be confused with those of Vatican I.
