What is The Mesopotamian God Kakka about?

AMONG the thousands of deities that formed the lower echelon of the Mesopotamian pantheon most are known to us only by their names and from scattered accidental references. One thus welcomes any new information which adds to our knowledge of these obscure deities. An Ur III tablet from Drehem, published here in hand-copy, yields new data pertaining to one such god, called Kakka. The tablet in question belongs to the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, and carries the accession number A 3210 (see fig. 1). I wish to express my thanks to Professor John A. Brinkman, former director of the Oriental Institute, for giving me his permission to publish this document. The tablet is dated to the fifth regnal year of Amar-Sin and deals with a receipt for animals. Line 8 of the tablet contains the following entry: 10 udu nin-dingir dga-ga mag-gin-gar-ru-umki, "10 sheep (delivered by) the nin-dingir priestess of Kakka of Malkan-garrum." From this passage we learn that the town of Ma?kan-?arrum was a center of the cult of Kakka during the Ur III period. Let us then examine other data which are available for this town and Kakka. The earliest references to Magkan-garrum come from Ur III text
