An analysis of a 1.2 million year old jawbone and tooth found in northern Spain confirms that early humans reached Western Europe much earlier than previously believed. The fossils were uncovered at the archaeological site of Atapuerca along with stone tools. They belong to Homo antecessor, a species first identified at Atapuerca in 1997 from other fossils dated to 900,000 years ago. This find suggests H. antecessor was likely a human species unique to Europe.
