During the Napoleonic Wars in 1796, Britain occupied the coastal areas of Sri Lanka to prevent French control, and annexed the entire island as a crown colony in 1815. 3. Under British rule, the Kandyan peasantry lost their lands which were given to European planters who established tea and rubber plantations, importing Tamil workers as indentured labor.
