Akkadian was an East Semitic language spoken in ancient Mesopotamia from the 3rd millennium BC until the 1st century AD. It was the lingua franca of the Middle East and Egypt in the late Bronze and early Iron Ages. Akkadian used cuneiform script adapted from Sumerian and had varieties including Old Akkadian, Old Babylonian, Middle Babylonian, and Neo-Assyrian. It was the dominant language of Mesopotamian empires throughout the Bronze Age before declining in favor of Aramaic by the 8th century BC.
