The Interlanguage of Cognate Languages: An Italian-Spanish Comparative Approach presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the interlanguage of two groups of learners (Italian students of Spanish and Spanish students of Italian) using two parallel longitudinal corpora: CORESPI and CORITE. The volume is targeted at teachers of Spanish and Italian as a second language and represents the first bidirectional study of the interlanguage of these cognate languages. Understanding how these two linguistic systems function from a contrastive perspective can be useful for examining the potential, as well as the challenges, associated with the learning of a cognate language. It can also serve as the basis for the design of pedagogical materials targeted at this type of learner. The book is divided into two parts. The first presents the theoretical background and the state-of-the-art of research on interlanguage in both Spanish and Italian. The second explains the structure of the two corpora and analyses the phono-orthographic, morphosyntactic and lexical aspects of the two cognate languages.
