It seems as though the epigraphic treasures of Mari are inexaustible! The appearance of the first two parts of Archives dpistolaires de Mari, a new subseries within the Archives royales de Mari, is a major event in the study of the ancient Near East in the second millennium B.C. To have at our disposal over 550 letters in these two parts, many of the greatest interest, seems too good to be true; yet a third fascicle is already in press, to contain (along with much else of interest) letters concerning music and musicians at Mari. J.-M. Durand is the sole author of the first fascicle. He has a very rich introduction to the letters from diviners and about divination, nearly all of which is concerned with the king, high officials, and military matters. A remarkable text, no. 1, is described as a "protocole des devins," that is, something of a loyalty oath to the king to report what is learned through divination, not to reveal secrets, and to report anything he learns from other diviners.
