Rizal received his early education in Binan, where he lived with his aunt for over a year and studied under teacher Justiniano Aquino Cruz. He excelled in Latin, Spanish, and painting lessons. After receiving a letter from his sister, Rizal returned home but was later sent by his father to the Ateneo Municipal in Manila, where he studied from 1872-1877 and graduated with highest honors with a degree in Bachelor of Arts.
