Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, was the capital of the Badami Chalukyas kingdom from 540 to 757 CE in modern Karnataka, India. It is located in a ravine surrounded by rugged sandstone cliffs and is famous for its rock cut cave temples dating back to the 6th century, which feature some of the earliest known paintings of Hindu legends in India. The town has a population of around 30,000 and the local economy depends on agriculture and tourism to its historical sites.
