David Matza and Gresham Sykes developed the theory of neutralization to explain juvenile delinquency. They identified five techniques of neutralization - denial of responsibility, denial of injury, denial of victim, condemnation of the condemners, and appeal to higher loyalties - that allow juveniles to rationalize criminal acts.
