About this document
Crystal Field Theory Overview by AmirahKamaruddin is a document available to read on EtoBox.
Crystal field theory explains the splitting of d-orbital energy levels in transition metal complexes. When ligands approach the metal ion, the d-orbitals split into two energy levels based on orientation - eg and t2g. For octahedral complexes, eg orbitals have higher energy than t2g orbitals. The energy gap between these levels, Δo, depends on the ligand field strength and increases with oxidation state. Electronic transitions between these levels cause color in complexes and allow determination of Δo. Comp
