A doctor examined a non-healing chronic leg ulcer and diagnosed chromomycosis. Microscopic examination of stained skin tissue sections easily showed the characteristic cigar-colored fungi. Typical findings included thickened epidermis, inflammatory cells in the dermis, and mixed tissue responses to the fungus including abscesses, granulomas, and foreign body giant cells surrounding fungal cells that had multiplied through septation rather than budding.
