The median nerve arises from the brachial plexus and travels through the arm and forearm, giving off branches along the way. In the forearm, it runs deep to muscles before becoming more superficial proximal to the wrist. In the wrist, it passes through the carpal tunnel and commonly divides into medial and lateral branches in the palm. The lateral branch innervates muscles of the thenar eminence and the thumb and index fingers, while the medial branch supplies the second and third fingers.
