Olivier Messiaen was deeply influenced by Indian rhythmic concepts in his compositions. He studied the 120 talas or rhythmic cycles from the Sangitaratnakara treatise. Messiaen incorporated specific talas directly from this source into several of his major works, including the Quartet for the End of Time and Turangalila Symphony. In these pieces, he uses the same succession of three talas - Rāgavardhana, Candrakalā, and Lakṣmīcā - in different instrumental parts. Messiaen
