Ki Hajar Dewantara was born in 1889 in Yogyakarta to a family of the Yogyakarta Kingdom. Originally named Raden Mas Soewardi Soeryaningrat, he was renamed Ki Hajar Dewantara at age 40. He worked as a journalist for several newspapers and was active in social and political organizations promoting nationalism and unity.
