NANDA\* Mr. N A N D A noted the broad consensus among the speakers that the indigenous people, especially in the United States and Canada, had suffered from deprivation of their economic, social, and cultural rights and that ways must be found to protect those rights, particularly land rights, preservation of cultural values, and the right to participate in the decisionmaking process. He stressed that the human misery and suffering of the indigenous people is this country is very real.
