What is The United States and Canada about?
America -in view of this ignorance, Professor Craig's book should be all the more welcome. The main difficulty of relations between the United States and Canada, which are really relations between individual Americans and individual Canadians, is that we Americans assume there are no difficulties. We simply take Canada for granted. This book makes the point well: there are difficulties, though not of the magnitude of those profound and far-reaching antagonisms that have grown up between the United States and the Soviet Union or between the United States and China; indeed, if you don't mind the cliche, they are no more than family difficulties. But family difficulties can be hard to clear up, especially if they are not really faced. This is not an alarmist book. Professor Craig does not believe that trouble is brewing along those famous three thousand miles of border without a fort. He is a Canadian who specializes in United States history and has lived and studied in this country. His own country he knows well. It is a great pleasure to welcome this book in the centennial year of Canada's national union. Peacham, Vermont CRANE BRINTON August 1967 gas with which Alberta in particular
