Shoulder impingement syndrome is a common cause of shoulder pain. Patients present with pain when elevating the arm between 70-120 degrees or overhead. The pathological mechanism is structural narrowing of the subacromial space, pinching soft tissues. A variety of factors can cause impingement. Treatment begins conservatively but may progress to surgery if symptoms persist longer than 2 years to restore shoulder function.
