What is EDUCATION FORUM about?
## Having Fun with Theory In the last Forum I gave the URL htl;p://~, cs .montana. edu/~dynalab as the gateway to thrills, fun, and exciting adventures with the theory of computing. Well, cheap thrills, anyway. At this point this page contains just one link, FSA, to the anticipated theme park of computer science theory. Under construction by PhD student Mike Grinder, the theme park will contain interactive animations of many fundamental aspects of the theory. At present, just one ride the FSA animator--has been completed as a sort of consumer test project. Will students like it? This was a question we explored in a recent formal evaluation of the FSA animator. Students in a first-semester sophomore class were presented with a module on finite state automata as part of the course. Readings from the textbook and a series of lectures were followed with a formal laboratory exercise involving the FSA animator. In the laboratory, students were first given a pre-test on finite state automata. They were then given a set of assignments to exercise a finite state automaton provided by the animator and to use the animator to construct and test their own finite state automaton to accomplish a
