What is Photoreduction of methyl-viologen by zeolite-Y stabilized silver clusters about?

In this work the ability of silver clusters stabilized on zeolite-Y { Ag-Y ) to photoreduction of intrazeolitic methyl-viologen ( MV 2' j to its ~-cation radicals (MV" ~ ) is reported. The zeolite was generated by chemical reduction of the zeolite entrapped Ag' cations { one Ag' cation per ten supercages) with aqueous NaBH4. Then, the Ag-Y sample was ion exchanged with MV -~' in order to obtain MV -~/Ag-Y assemblies. The integrity of this zeolite was documented by electrochemical, diffuse reflectance ( DR ~ and emission spectroscopy { EM measurements. The cyclic voltammogram of the zeolite covered glassy carbon electrode showed two redox couples at E~/~ = -0.49 and -0.79 V versus Ag/AgCI. due to MV 2 \* two step electroreduction, and an anodic wave at E 0 = I).34 V versus Ag/AgCI which was assigned to electrooxidation of the silver clusters. The emission spectrum of the Ag-Y zeolite, acquired with 406.7 nm excitation, exhibited luminescence centered at A~.,,, = 495 nm. This emission was assigned to fluorescence of the silver clusters corresponding to their optical absorption at A,,,,,, = 406 nm. it was fourd that the optically excited surface plasmon of the Ag particles, with Ihe l
