## THIRTY-FIVE FIGURES In the appendix of the healthy rabbit the lymphatic nodules are arranged in a uniform pattern in a single layer. The cellular composition of these nodulses can be greatly modified by x-irradiation without disrupting the pattern (De Bruyri, '48a. b). The individual nodules have a distinctly oriented long axis, which is a further advantage of this organ for histocliemical studies on tlie lymphatic tissue. The Carlsberg procedures (Linderstrdm-Lang and Holter, '35) for comparison of microscopic preparations with quantitative assays of adjacent sections, were employed to study the effects of x-irradiation on the distribution of phosphatases. The microscopic preparations \\-ere made according to methods developed by Gomori ( '49). Paraffin sections were al'so suitable f o r quantitative assay since phosphatases are preserved during paraffin embedding in quantitatively predictable proportions (Doyle, '48). Sections adjacent to o r near the ones used for microscopic and quantitative examination were aiialyzed f o r total purine and pyrimidine content and for total nitrogen.
