The Heian period lasted from 794 to 1185 in Japan. It began when the imperial capital was moved from Nara to Heian-kyo (modern Kyoto). Although the imperial family nominally held power, real authority was held by the powerful Fujiwara clan, who had intermarried with the imperial family and controlled succession.
