What is Hydrogen Production from Syngas about?
The growing greenhouse gas emission, which is the result of exceeding burning fossil fuels, has resulted in climate change and provoked protests from environmental activists. This issue, in combination with the hydrocarbon-containing fuel depletion, has resulted in devoting considerable research effort to find a cleaner energy source instead of fossil fuels. As the only carbon-free fuel, hydrogen will be one of the most significant renewable energy sources in this line. However, hydrogen does not find freely in nature like fossil fuels; hence, various reforming methods, such as steam reforming, partial oxidation, and autothermal, are utilized to achieve this goal. These technologies produce syngas, which is a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and occasionally carbon dioxide. Therefore, subsequent separation processes are needed to separate hydrogen from other components and achieve high pure H2. Pressure swing adsorption, membrane-assisted method, and syngas redox are suitable choices to recover hydrogen from syngas. This chapter overviews the major syngas production methods as well as hydrogen purification techniques from synthesis gas.
