In dealing with the various dialects of the singers, I decided to include the non-standard grammatical features used by the singers (for example, 'we was' instead of 'we were'; 'she runned' or 'run' instead of 'she ran'), but only those non-standard features of pronunciation necessary to the rhyme and rhythm of the songs. If I had used non-standard spelling to indicate every unusual feature of these dialects, the reader would be struggling to unravel the orthographic mystery before ever getting the sense of the story, and this book would lose its value as a songbook.
