Amphibians are a class of cold-blooded vertebrates that mostly have four limbs. They live in a variety of habitats including freshwater, on land, in trees, and underground. Amphibians typically hatch from eggs as aquatic larvae with gills and later undergo metamorphosis to become air-breathing adults with lungs. There are about 7,000 known amphibian species, nearly 90% of which are frogs. Amphibians first evolved in the Devonian period and the three modern orders are frogs, salamanders, and caecilians.
