Chimpanzees share 98.5% of human DNA and are our closest living relatives. Studying chimpanzee behavior can provide clues about early human ancestors. While previously believed to be strict vegetarians, research beginning in the 1960s found that chimpanzees are skilled hunters that supplement their mostly fruit-based diet with meat during dry seasons when other foods are scarce.
