What is Barbra Streisand about?

Barbra Streisand A n eclectic group of celebrities dubbed "Friends of Oscar" jointly hosted the 41st Academy Awards (1969) at its new location, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. In a rare display of male-targeted finger-pointing during the presentation of the Best Director Award, the former Best Actress winner Ingrid Bergman explained that she and her female cohosts were "assembled, somewhat reluctantly, to give the Award for Best Director." 1 "This year the nominated directors have done their best," Jane Fonda stated. "To make female stars obsolete," continued Rosalind Russell. "Only one of the four," Natalie Wood concluded, "even had a lady star in his picture, and that was Lion in Winter." 2 Later Bergman returned to the stage to present the Oscar for Best Actress. Opening the envelope and generating astonishment from an audience in disbelief, she gasped, "It's a tie! The winners are Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl." 3 With Hepburn and Streisand beating out Vanessa Redgrave (Isadora) and past recipients Joanne Woodward (Rachel, Rachel) and Patricia Neal (The Subject Was Roses), Streisand was escorted to the stage
