Founded in Canton in 1832, this company has been built up, principally from bases in the East, to become an international trading house with business interests throughout the world. The ten chapters unravel an exciting story of merchant adventure, of how wealth and influence were accumulated in the early days of trading, and of the special relationship with China and her people which has been forged over many years. They explain how the company faced the challenge of the last yers of the 19th century by diversifying into the construction of railroads in China, into other industrial activities, and how, after the post-war period, the firm went public in 1961. This, in turn, led to further territorial diversification and to the succcesses of the following two decades.
