The study identifies the role of OsOTS1, a SUMO protease in rice, as a critical regulator of salt stress responses. Transgenic rice plants overexpressing OsOTS1 exhibit increased salt tolerance and reduced levels of SUMO-conjugated proteins, while OsOTS-RNAi plants show high sensitivity to salt stress. The findings suggest that OsOTS1 enhances root biomass under salt stress and is essential for modulating SUMOylation during such conditions.
